Could I thread DK yarn into this needle to make toys?

Yes sorry its been so long in answering but so busy. Yes I bought needles to sew legs on a teddy bear so legs moved. They had to be long enough to go from one leg through body and other leg. The eyes of the needles are not as big as ordinary needles you use for sewing knitting together but I managed fine.

Can i get a needle to go through tent poles with elastric

Yes these will work , long and stable, but for extra weight I would put a blog of blue tack on end.
