KUNIKO's much-anticipated third studio recording features the works of Lannis Xenakis, whose work has had a huge impact within the world of music, and in particular on percussion repertoire. Full of challenges, from the pioneering mathematical influences, to unusual notation and virtuosic performance requirements, many classify Xenakis' compositions as unplayable, but KUNIKO's unrivalled prowess sees her perfectly realise the composer's vision. KUNIKO gave the world premiere of Project IX at the Japan Society in New York in 2014. Pléiades explores a rich variety of percussive sounds and textures; marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, xylo-marimba and drums create a sound world of rhythmic complexity and vibrant colours. Uniquely, Pléiades also requires a SIXXEN, an instrument designed by Xenakis and customised by KUNIKO, who hand-selected 120 metal bars to craft the perfect sound.Since becoming a percussion soloist, Rebonds is a piece that KUNIKO has been playing and performing throughout her entire career. After hearing this performance of Xenakis' popular piece, renowned percussionist Sylvio Gualda congratulated KUNIKO on her 'marvelous' interpretation. KUNIKO is a soloist who is recognized around the world for her astonishing virtuosity, exquisite musical insight and expressive yet elegant performance style. She is renowned for her flawless technique when playing both keyboard and percussion instruments, which blends seamlessly with her profound musical intelligence. KUNIKO's debut Kuniko plays reich was acclaimed by the media becoming Linn's bestselling album of 2011, whilst cantus entered the Top 10 of the Official UK Specialist Classical Chart. In 2012 KUNIKO completed a world tour playing at venues in America, France, Israel, Italy, Switzerland, Japan and Australia and in 2013 performed at several UK festivals. KUNIKO endorses Adams Musical Instruments and Pearl Musical Instruments worldwide. Review: Music as dynamic architecture. - I succumbed to golden praise of Alex Ross's review. He hasn't steered me wrong yet. This is an amazing performance! It's the first time I've emotionally connected to Xenakis and Kuniko is an incredible musician. A perfect example of an inversion of Goethe famous phrase; music beong dynamic architecture. I only wish I had a SACD player. Review: Very musical performance and a nice recording of a wonderful work - Very musical performance and a nice recording of a wonderful work, although I feel the timpani and bass drum sounds have been compressed and recorded too low.

This is the 3rd Kuniko CD - works by Xenakis - the abstract and 'mechanical' content may not appeal to some.
The content of this 3rd Kuniko release (I have both of the others) is more abstract than I anticipated (I will admit I was not familiar with Xenakis, the composer). However, I suspect it may turn out to be one of those CDs that needs time and several listening session in the quiet hours of the night. Time will tell ...

A wonderful disc. The percussion and drums are hypnotic, mesmerising. The sound engineering is stunning- a depth clarity and spaciousness within which the performance sits perfectly.

Xenakis: IX Kuniko Kato Recorded at Lake Sagami Hall, Kanagawa, Japan on 15-18 December 2013, 11-15 January 2014, 2-4 and 30 September 2014 and 1 October 2014 CKD 495 Linn Records Pleiades: I. Melanges (Mixtures 総合) 08:51 Pleiades: II. Metaux (Metals 金属) 13:56 Pleiades: III. Claviers (Keyboards 鍵盤) 10:31 Pleiades: IV. 「Pleiades: II.
