The Lushness Of J. Herbin Ocean Blue Anniversary Ink
J. Herbin inks are one of the finest and most sought after liquid inks available anywhere in the world. This series of inks are specially formulated by J. Herbin and commemorate the 340 years during which J. Herbin has been making their truly special writing products. The ink is unique in that it is a highly saturated product and thus allows the user to write in a manner that is just not possible with any other manufacurer's ink products. This Anniversary ink series now comes in 4 rich and luscious colors. They include this ink, called "Bleu Ocean" as well as, a deep red called "Rouge Hemitite", a wonderful gray, and finally, a deep "Emerald Green." Herbin has been making these inks for 4 years now. The literature states that the intensity of the "Bleu Ocean" is reminiscent of the sea voyages of founder J. Herbin as he was traveling in the far east during which time he found the special "gum" which allowed J. Herbin to produce their unique sealing wax, for which they are also known throughout the world. Herbin inks were used by Napolean Bonaparte and then his son, the King of Rome. Herbin inks have been widely admired and in 1823, J. Herbin won an award in the London exhibition and many other international exhibitions over the 344 years since their inception. Amazon makes these inks available from several different retailers. The specific bottle that I bought was fulfilled by "Bertram's Inkwell" in Rockville, MD. "Bertram's Inkwell" is a full service writing store and pride themselves on a plethora of unique and extraordinary quality writing products, including the finest inks in the world, the most excellently performing sealing waxes, special papers and high end writing journals, as well as fountain pens, roller balls and virtually any product needed for the most discriminating writing tools and supplies. It is only fitting that these special Anniversary Edition Inks from J. Herbin should be sold by among others, "Bertram's Inkwell," now in its 25th year of existence. They pride themselves on having the highest quality products, including Mont Blanc, Cross, J. Herbin, Caran d'Ache, Pilot, Montegrappa and many other fine writing products from the best manufacturers in the entire world. Thus, it is most appropriate that Amazon teamed up with "Bertram's Inkwell" to bring its customers to one of the finest sources for the retail purchase of this amazing ink, along with many other products. In the truest style of Amazon, there is no limitation upon which this company with the most vast and finest collection of products to its highly discriminating customers. Amazon is truly the ultimate retailer of virtually anything that a buyer might wish to procure. The plethora of products that Amazon brings to its customer base is unequaled by any other retailer in the entire world. Thus, it was only natural that they would team up with "Bertam's Inkwell" and several other fine retailers to allow its customers to procure virtually anything they need for the most satisfying writing experience, whether Amazon fulfills it themselves or whether they team up with extraordinary retailers to bring to its exacting customers such unique products as those manufactured by J. Any writer who wishes to use the highest quality writing products will find them available through Amazon and other retailers such as "Bertram's Inkwell" and 4 or 5 other great retailers. Do not forego the opportunity to write with the finest ink available anywhere in the entire globe. One note of warning is important. This ink, as with all the Anniversary Ink series is a very highly saturated ink product. The user should be aware that after they are done using this ink and any of the other Anniversary inks from J. Herbin, that the ink must be removed from the fountain pen so as not to allow it to clog the pen. In order to completely avoid this one consideration, writers should consider the use of "glass dip pens" so that upon completion of use, it is a simple matter for the user to wash the glass pen in warm water and thus, not damage in any way the glass pens, some of the best of which are made also by J. Herbin and made available also to Amazon's customers. Clearly, Amazon's concept of customer service "No Matter What It Takes" is a clear Hallmark of Amazon's method of doing business. The user should not hesitate to utilize these most unique and wondrous Anniversary series of inks, which Amazon once again has managed to bring to the exacting consumer in their usual "absolute customer satisfaction guarantee" promise. There truly is no other ink anywhere of a higher quality and level of saturation than this special series made by J. Herbin and supplied by either Amazon or its seller partners. I cannot recommend this product highly enough. It is hard to imagine the fine quality of this set of special inks made by J. Herbin and sold to Amazon's customers who want only the very best quality at a reasonable price, with a guarantee of fast and predictable delivery. Do not hesitate to try this color and the other three colors in the J. Herbin series of Anniversary Inks.

Mesmerizing Color... Fantastic Ink (beware it's a new formula though - golden sheen no more - see EDIT)
First things first, it is true what other reviews said, this has been reformulated, so there won't be much of a golden sheen to your red (at least there was none that I could see. But maybe it truly makes the ink safer for fountain pens, so I won't complain if I can safely use it in some expensive pen. Even though, a little sticker on the plastic wrap around the package warns you that this ink is very saturated and that oyou shouldn't leave it lying in a pen reservoir forever... (hence I'll wait a bit until I dare put this in my Diplomat MB 149). And saturated it is! The red is deep and strong, and yet it gives off a nice shading. The color is mesmerizing. It's the red of all reds! It's expensive, but it's not like I am going to write novels with this, or take minutes in business meetings. I may use it to annotate here and there, and do a few drawings and letters. So, even though it is pricey, I can see this mottle lasting me quite a few years. Last (and maybe least of all) the bottle is kind of cool. Antique-looking little cube. I was afraid the red waxy knob would have to be broken, or the string cut... but as it turns out, it's a rubberized coating on the cap, and the string does not attach to it, so no wax seal to break-off. The bottle will look cool even in a couple years. 3 MONTHS EDIT --- The gold sheen is indeed there, but you need to shake the bottle quite a bit before filling, and it only works if you have tremendous flow, and areas where the ink can pool and concentrate (using an italic or a flex nib for example). Also depends on the paper. Unsurprisingly, the sheen shows better with high quality paper...

Amazing ink that will catch your eye..!
Emerald of Chivor is an absolutely gorgeous ink that lays down beautifully. The color ranges from a greenish teal to dark emerald green and various shades in between. But it doesn't stop there, it also shows shades and hints of red and even black. There's also gold fleck in the mix and it's sparkle can appear as silvery, golden, or almost diamond like. So lighting and angle also play a part in the appearance of this ink. Overall the color of this ink can vary by whether or not you shake the bottle prior to filling your pen and also by how much you shake the bottle prior to filling your pen. It also varies by your choice of nib size and each pen which you choose to ink up with this beautiful ink will have a different color effect. Unfortunately the ink is not in the least bit waterproof and so a single drop of liquid can destroy your writing or artwork. But that also makes the ink easy to clean from your pen, it just takes a slight bit more effort to remove all of the gold fleck so I tend to use it with pens which have a removable nib and feed section. But those little quirks aside, this is my go to ink. I would say that I now use this for about 95 percent of my writing and only choose other inks just for some variation or when I have to fill out forms or anything requiring a signature. Emerald of Chivor is a FANTASTIC ink, I highly recommend it!

Beautiful but limiting
Despite the price of this ink, I did not expect it to be well-suited for my purposes when I purchased it. However, this brown/gold ink has surpassed most of my expectations. The main drawback is how quickly the gold separates to the bottom. It may be cumbersome or ineffective to use it with anything other than a fountain pen because of how often you have to mix the gold back in. The plus sides definitely outweigh that, but it's something to actively keep in mind when using this ink. Before using it at all including filling your pens, you will need to very thoroughly roll the bottle to mix. I had to stop several times while filling the converter, close it back up, and roll the bottle for another minute before continuing, as so much of the gold had already settled. As pictured, the gold will also settle in your converter, and may accumulate under the nib. This happens both between and during uses, causing me to generally have to stop and gently agitate the airbubble in the converter, or may otherwise experience restricted or uneven lay of ink/metallics. That said, I have so far only used this in an extra-fine pen, which other text here has cautioned may not be an effective use of these inks, and I have been impressed. I have not experienced any significant clogging, even after laying the pen on it's side for long periods (though I did roll it well). While subtle, I still got gold shimmers with my extra-/fine pen. The gold is fine enough not to cause any noticeable increase in friction or scratchiness. It does not possess the strong purple tones sometimes common to brown/sepia inks. This ink is very nice to write with, and I particularly enjoy the quality it gives to my sketches.

Awesome ink. Get this!
This is now my favorite ink. I've had it for about a year now, and it's all I use in my TWSBI 580. It's hard to describe how beautiful it is, and a picture doesn't do it justice. It behaves very well: dries at an acceptable rate, flows nicely, doesn't bleed a ton, even on cheap printer paper. If you use it on nicer papers you can't beat the smoothness it provides, although a lot of inks have that. The most important parts to me are it's shading, sheening, and shimmer. Shading is where the ink pools in certain spots and, well, shades differently. Sheening is where the ink has a high saturation and with this ink, some spots where it pools turn sort of shiny purple. Shimmer is basically microscopic glitter, and the shimmer in this ink is a super fun greenish gold. The bottle is one of the most beautiful I've seen, and I've had mine on display on my desk since I got it. I would definitely recommend it if you're new to fountain pen inks, as this ink features all the cool properties you might want. It's high price is justifiable with it's quality and quantity.

I've used many inks, but this line is hands down the best
I adore this ink. The entire line of J. Herbin 1670 anniversary ink is like no other, and absolutely worth every penny. It is rich, it is deep, it isn't too "wet," it dries quickly. I would not recommend this for use with a small nib pen, as it is on the thicker side, and the gold flakes will almost certainly clog the ink chamber and flow mechanism. If you do not regularly use your pen, this also is not the ink for you, as it will dry and be a pain to clean. that being said, if you're like me, and you use your fountain pen every day, with a medium to wide nib, you will love this ink. It's a rich, navy blue, with hints and tones of black and grey, and of course gold, when used on a nice quality paper, such as Tomoe River. On a standard run of the mill notebook or legal pad or what have you, the ink will look like a standard blue, and you won't really see the other tones or the gold. That's all well and good and it's a great ink to use even if just on standard paper, but it really shines when using it on paper that will bring out the deep and multi-faceted tones of the ink. The whole line is absolutely lovely, and while the ocean blue isn't my favorite (the Emerald of Chivor is hands down the best), it's a lovely color well worth having in your collection.

Gorgeous and great ink
I love this ink and it's extremely unique. It flows well and starts in the pens I've put it in. The drying time is longer on this ink than many others so write slowly and don't smear. This would not do well for a left-handed writer. This ink is so beautiful looking. It is a blood-red color with lovely bronze/green in it as well. This ink is truly 2 colors and the bronze part looks goldish to greenish depending on light, paper, and pen. All the colors are very saturated. A few other things about this ink. The box and plastic wrap warn you this is a heavily saturated ink. It also clearly has particles in it which can be bad news for a fountain pen. You must take care in what pen you use this that it is easy to clean. It will come off with just water but you'll need to spend extra time. That also means this ink isn't water-proof, just like many inks. I will say, REALLY don't get it wet though unless you want a very vibrant pink and red mess everywhere. I mean everywhere. Lastly - I am guessing I got the 'reformulated' version. This newer recipe has less of the gold particles in it, but mine still shades beautifully. So, who knows, but it looks great to me still.

Red with Gold flakes seriously add some flare
Beautiful ink and I do live the gold flake accents in the writing. Also bought a different pen for each ink type and/or colour so no need to worry about blending inks or cleaning when switching ink colors. Great ink though considered problematic inks due to the gold flakes I haven't had any issues with that.
