What happens if a light bulb burns out, how do you replace them?

Yes. The light is covered under a lifetime warranty.

Will it stand in portrait orientation, or only landscape?

There is a built in kickstand on the back of this unit. This stand allows you to set up the unit in landscape position.

How far away do you sit for it to be effective?

For effective light therapy, you need to use the light at a 10,000 LUX distance. The Aurora LightPad is 10,000 LUX at 30 inches. I hope this information helps.

Does the stand fold in to make it lay flat? Does the plug protrude from the back or the side?

Yes, the built in kickstand can fold into the back of the unit so that it is flat. There is a small hole on the side of the unit where the cord plugs in.
