Review: Matisyahu and the Change Show Musical Progress - When I think of Matisyahu I normally think of "Youth," "Live Like a Warrior," "King Without a Crown," "Lord Raise Me Up," or even "Jerusalem (Out Of Darkness Comes Light)." Light has given me a new, refreshing outlook on Matisyahu with an ever evolving style and some new tracks that really do deliver a different experience for fans, newcomers, and all those in between. I think it is imperative to note that the Light album is a path less traveled by Matisyahu, and will represent a stark contrast to the reggae we are most accustomed to, but that's not to say the album should be discarded as I have said. Personally, I like the change. While some may call it selling-out, and it certainly could be considered as such with the hip-hop tones, the rocking lines, and the divergence from religious rhymes solely. What I like to note though is that this is growth in a musician and behind the musician, a human being. With enough being said about Matisyahu, let's get into the music. Most know that "One Day" is a standalone smash hit, but the rest of the album packs a super hard punch. The album as a whole was a pleasant surprise after listening to it a few times. After the first listen-through after listening to old Matisyahu for years, it will sound different. "Smash Lies" comes out of the gate like a drag racing car blowing you away scratching your head asking what you just heard. It will take time to get used to if you are looking for more stylish reggae like that Matisyahu is known for. Another solid example of a good mixture of new and old would be something like "So Hi So Lo" which has a rock undertone with a Matisyahu rhythmic flow for the lyrics. "I Will Be Light" would be that reminder of Matisyahu's roots as it reminds the devout fans that he is just growing--not selling out. Overall this album is a must have for Matisyahu fans--new and old. Take the change, you won't regret it. 5 LightDay Stars out of 5! Review: Wonderful Music - This CD is everything I thought it would be. You can listen to it from Smash Lies, track 1, to Silence, track 13, and love every single song. I can't say I even have a favorite. Matisyahu has something powerful to say in every lyric. Light is exactly what the title claims. The first CD by Matisyahu, Live At Stubbs has a beautiful hip hop reggae feel while Light branches off into something more. The guitar solo in Motivate will make you feel like you are at Woodstock, Silence is prayerful, and One Day is a Bob Marley style song of hope. Get this CD and embrace the Light

A great matisyahu album.
I very much enjoyed this album by Matisyahu. The composition of the songs and recording are all very well done. His style in this album is a little bit more hip-hop than previous albums, but still maintains the strong reggae influences. It's refreshing to hear music in this genre with more lyrical content than your average song about a club-night fling. As a Christian, I found Matisyahu's lyrics incredibly relevant, and a good insight into some of the practical differences between Christians and Jews regarding spirituality.

AMAZING!
I am not even going to bother reading any of the negative reviews because this cd is the best Matisyahu yet in my opinion. How many follow-up cd's come out after a hit like Live at Stubbs that are just as good or better? Not many....and Light just blew me away. Music is an individual experience and there are several tracks on this cd that give me chills. I have seen him live and can't wait to go again to hear some of the Light songs live.

Amazing
I love this album and play it often. The beat is great and the words are inspiring, spoken straight from the heart. Usually with most albums that I buy, I have one or two favorites of the whole album but with this one, it is easier to pick the non favorites as most of the songs are on my "fav" list.

Try it
Everyone seems to know of Matisyahu except for me. However a few of my friends have never heard of him. One Day is the most inspirational & hopeful song. Other songs are thought provoking. A fusion of many musical styles.

Took a while to warm up to, but much better than "Youth"
I am a big Matis fan, and absolutely loved "Live at Stubbs." I went to see him in 2006 here in Phoenix, and the show was awesome. I really appreciate the fact that his lyrics are positive and spiritual, and the fact that the music was good too was a big positive. I was not very impressed with his second album, "Youth," and to be honest, listen to it very rarely. It's not that it's a bad album, it just seemed a little over produced, and none of the songs really seemed to grab me. Of course, he is not the first artist to fall to the "sophomore album curse," and given the freshness and vibrancy of "Live at Stubbs," it is hard to imagine that any studio album would be satisfying. So when I got "Light," I wasn't sure what to expect. I had read some of the reviews here on Amazon, and was somewhat hesitant, but because I love what he stands for, and consider him a great musical artist, I picked it up. And I have to be completely honest - upon first listening, I did not like this album. It seemed that he had gone completely to the other end of the spectrum - a pop sound, a lot of production, and hip hop beats. But when I listened to the lyrics, they were still positive and uplifting. But a funny thing happened as I kept listening to this album - I started really, really liking it. There are still some soungs that capture the reggae sound that people first came to love him for, like "Struggla"; there are some very beautiful songs that say extremely positive and hopeful things, like "One Day" (which should be the global national anthem, one of the best songs ever made by anyone), and the more tender song "I Will Be Light." I also like "We Will Walk" and "Thunder" very much, and all of the other songs are good as well. And the more I listen to it, the more I like it. To me, that is often the mark of a truly great album - I don't like it at first, but it keeps growing on me. I do hope that he will cut back on the production a bit his next album, but I understand too that he has something to say, and he is trying to reach a wider audience than just those who like reggae. And I don't think we can fault him for that. This is a very good album, and if you like Matis and like positive music, pick it up - and be sure to listen to it several times before deciding whether you like it or not.

UN-BE-LIEVABLE
From the opening riff of the first track right through the last tender notes of "Silent" this album is an epic success. Anyone who enjoys any Matisyahu music, or anyone who enjoys meaningful, thoughtful, and well produced music should love this album. I can't stop playing it, and in no way is that depressing.
