Cold Steel Frontier Hawk Tomahawk without Sheath - 90FHS, One Size (001478)

These are about the best you can get without going custom. Steel is good and the hickory handle is also outstanding. But best of all you can customize these to your hearts content without making them less in any way. I have several of these in different styles and got this one for a present for my son's birthday, my first Frontier Hawk. After modifying it to look allot like the first pic, remove finish on handle, remove paint/finish on head, carefully custom fit head, cold blue, stain handle, several coats Tung Oil, rebevel edge and mirror polish, leather wrap handle and done. I use the others for camping but I liked the fit and balance and feel of this one so much I ordered another one for me. Great tool, you can throw them with care and practice but they are a wonderful outdoor tool. I something give them as presents and they become wallhangers but ones you can use. Light and very useful especially if you have things to do with wood. You can even forget your camping knife and just use one of these, just remember the sharpener. Choke up on it and it will do everything a knife will. The steel is good enough to take a good edge and hold it and resharpens fairly well. All in all I cannot say enough good about them especially considering the price. Awesome tool for fires either at home or in the woods and also a great whack the bad guys tool too.

I had been researching tomahawks for a while and settled on the CS Frontier Hawk. I am happy with my purchase. It is as I expected and reviewed by others I've seen on U Tube. I like to customize my tools and this one was no exception.It needed some hand fitting of the handle to the eye to make it a secure fit. Unlike others, I used the set screw by inserting a tool steel bushing into the handle in the location where the screw makes contact. Now the set screw has a metal bearing surface and is totally functional. The handle does not loosen from chopping or throwing and can be removed for replacement or to use the head as a Ulu knife if desired in a survival situation. I removed the epoxy paint with paint remover and smoothed the rough forging marks on the blade with a 120 grit flap wheel on a right angle grinder then polished and blued it. The handle was a bit long for me, so I cut it down to 18", drilled a lanyard hole, and refinished it. It looks fantastic and is very sharp! I also purchased the sheath and am pleased with it too. This won't be my last Cold Steel product.

This is a great, functional tomahawk. Not super sharp when arrived but not too dull either. There is a lot of info concerning refinishing, modifying etc these and simiar tomahawks online, which is fine if that is what you want to do, but it works well right out of the box except for needing sharpening. I did sharpen, take out the set screw and sanded and stained the handle. Hawk head fits snug with or without the screw. Very light and cuts and splits kindling etc well. As light as a large knife but cuts better than a machete or hatchet of simiar size due to the longer handle and thin blade. Blade width to me seems wider and thus more useful than most other Cold Steel and similar tomahawk models if you really want to cut with it. I have not tried throwing this tomahawk and do not plan to use as a thrower, but as a multi functional camping/hunting tool. Would buy again.UPDATE: After owning and using this Tomahawk for several months, I just wanted to make a couple of new comments; The Tomahawk still meets my expectations. It cuts branches, splits wood etc just fine. I have cut about 6" off of the handle just to make it easier to pack, drilled a lanyard hole near the new end of the handle and added a second coat of finish to the wood and a length of 550 paracord as a wrist wrap. (Knowing that I can get a second/replacement handle and go back to the longer handle anytime). I purchased a Cold Steel sheath for about $5 to make it easy to safely put in/on my rucksack. So for less than $40, I have a good bushcraft, camping and general tool use trimming branches etc around the yard or wood pile. Would still buy again.

I originally got the Trail Hawk thinking I would be really impressed with it, turns out I was disappointed. The head was tiny and thin and had no splitting ability. I read the reviews about it being able to be used for fine detail work but....I have knives for that. When I want a tomahawk, I want something with a slight wedge design and a broad-ish head for good swings, cuts, and splits. This hawk is still relatively small, if you compare the actually once according to cold steel's web site between the Trail Hawk and the Frontier Hawk you will see the once are similar. I would buy this again in heart beat. I realize that the trail hawk has a hammer on the back for tasks that require one BUT!!!!! LET'S BE HONEST HERE. These things are 1095 high carbon steel, they are not going to break, you can easily use the back of the Frontier Hawk for hammering tasked just as easily as you can with a real hammer. So don't get caught up in that hype.

The Cold Steel Frontier Hawk is a classic trade hawk design. It is light weight and an excellent general purpose tool that also throws well. For the money it is hard to find a better designed and built hawk. Like other Cold Steel products, it comes with a black painted head and light hickory handle attached with a set screw. It was only moderately sharp from the factory, but was easily touched up. This is a great product and an excellent first tomahawk for anyone who might want to try one out. Expect to like it and become addicted!

1st off u have to sand fit any hawk head, especially from cold steel. Look up how to do this and only use sandpaper ur first time and only do a a little at a time, especially as u get close.There’s a screw that shouldn’t be used, as it will destroy &Split the handle w any real use plusPuts the head and blade alignment off center. If u properly fit the handle & head it will fit & stay perfectly, not damage the handle, and the 2 can still be easily separated for packing or the handle can be replaced w a branch properly whittled to fit.Anyways, got the hawk head fitted perfectly and the blade fully sharpened w a puck inless than an hour. It’s light balances well, has a decent size edge etc. and seems perfect for a lite hiking camping tool that also offers pretty decent protection from black bears panthers etcAnyways, it’s simple and CS’s lightest traditional style wooden handled hawk, and probably their lightest hawk which Is a good thing. Believe the trail hawk & Nordic hawk are the 2nd and 3rd lightest.

The axe was delivered quickly, and arrived securely packed in a box. I also purchased Trail Hawk, Norse Hawk, SOG's Tactical and Fast Hawks.I removed the set screw, and discovered that the haft needed some shaving, in order to ensure a tight fit.That took about 10 minutes. The set screw is not coming back. There is enough wood still sticking out the head (more than 3/4 in.), so I doubt I will lose the head while swinging away.The haft tapered down to the width that was rather too narrow for a secure grip. It was smooth and thin at the end, and I was afraid it would slip out of my hand, as I was using it. So I wrapped thin tape for the tennis racquet handle. I did not add any wood treatment at all. Now I cannot remove the axe head from the haft, but the grip has improved so much that chopping action is secure and enhanced. And I added a hole for lanyard, in case I needed to wade through a squadron of zombies.I examined the inside of the eye, and it was smooth without any burr, and there was no need to file away any metal. The blade came sharpened enough for immediate chopping duty. I just ran the edge a few times against fine grain sandpaper to polish the edge.One problem with the head is that the blade's orientation is off-center. This screams "Cheap!" Looking down from the head towards the tapered end of the haft, one can see that the blade is twisted off the center--about 1 inch off the end of the haft. The tree would not feel the difference, when chopped with this head, but such a defect indicates that the head is manufactured with less care. It gives one the feeling that this is not really a quality-controlled production.I have been throwing this axe into a pine trunk, which I saved when a tree was removed. The paint is now peeled off the blade, revealing the bare metal. But the initial blade sharpness remains. It is not shaving sharp. I would not want it to be that sharp, sharp enough to handle without the danger of getting cut. Plenty sharp enough to bite into any thing live or dead, with the satisfying, "Thunk." The head stays tight, requiring only one tap after a long session of throwing.As far as the weight is concerned, it was comfortable to wield, and the length of the haft is long enough for the swinging bite into wood branch. The shorter the haft, the less the kinetic energy.The tomahawk is adequate for a light chopping duty, but not for the real job of felling, let's say, a 6-in. branch. It can be done, but it becomes a chore. For throwing, however, it is a delight. Only the haft shows some dents now, since it missed the target and glanced off the tree trunk a few times. I can see that if one abused this axe, it would not be difficult to break the hickory handle.All in all, this is a good tool for the money, and useful one to have around. I would recommend it to anyone.I would have given this 4 stars, but it gets only 3 for the off-centered blade.Compared to SOG's hawks, Cold Steel hawks have multi-use characteristic. If you want to have a protection weapon, get SOG, although its stainless steel is softer. If you want a tool for the camp, and possibly for zombie medicine, get CS Frontier Hawk.

I bought this for my son as a birthday present and he said it was perfect. Probably good for throwing.

Not a review guy, expert or critique, but seeing the low reviews on this item, couldn’t resist!First of all, yes, if you’re looking for perfection in your living room, bragging with your friends, watching videos on “how to”, and actually not getting out there and experimenting stuff on your own and depending on your tools, it’s fine, DON’T BUY THIS ONE, buy a schnitzel hatchet, at list will help you with cooking, lol!This hawk is perfect to my opinion, used it for 6 years now and still have a great deal of life in it!Sharpened well, will slice through paper/cut the hair on your arm as you wouldn’t believe it, or cut a chunk of meat/apple in mid air (150, 400 gritt, then a tile and leather belt, all wet, this is the short process to sharpen it). For throwing, found it well balanced and accurate/powerful (went to a team building/throwing event with a bunch of newbbies, inclunding myself, and must say everyone agreed that it was easier throw than the other hawks provided on site).As the description about forging says, blade is more aggressive than back, have a dent in the back of my Frontier from the Pipe Hawk I also threw..Forget the pinning set screw on the handle, don’t use it, fit your handle into the blade first with a file, then use electrical tape to stop it from sliding back (I know, a lot of extra work for the price you’re paying).Also cut about 3-4 inches off the handle, which makes it way faster for combat/retrieving and harden it into a camp fire without burning it, you will turn it into almost a rock!I’ve spent some years/winters outdoors (through my job and my choice) and this and a Leatherman Wave would be the tools (in that order) I would like to be stranded with. I’ve built shelters, cut trees down on snowmobile/quad/truck’s path when I got stuck, skinned game, chipped holes for ice fishing (in 2 feet ice) and prepared food with both this tools.Also gave up the bear spray (preety much same price, expires every few years and doesn’t cut wood) ever since I carry this on my belt/backpack, at my fast, an must say it made me more confident (came upon unaware bears several times and even got bluff-charged).Frontier Hawk and Wave Leatherman never leave my side, either if is hunting, hiking, fishing, camping or outdoors working. The only reason for choosing Frontier over Trail Hawk was the weight (for backpacking) but I believe every Cold Steel hawk will do. Found the Pipe Hawk to be more suited for truck camping chores (more weight to the head and hammering end for cutting wood and pounding tent poles, nothing that Frontier wouldn’t do with little more perseverance).Bought my hawks on a sale and after couple of months of research but, ever since, bought a few more as a gift to my friends, they all apreciated it!In the end, I believe that no tool will buy you skills, you only have to find the right one for yours, but highly recommend Cold Steel Hawks, even “Made in Taiwan” ;)**By the way, in the photos, you may see the dent made by the other hawk and my daughter’s Flamingo, who loves my Hawk**Cheers and get outthere!!!

I like this axe it good but I did costumed it. Works great haven't broke the handle yet.

Having read a a few of the negative remarks along with the numerous positive reviews I took a chance and ordered this product. on delivery I found that the handle was a little loose but as this took under two minutes to correct I don't perceive it as a problem. In all other respect I have found this tomahawk to be good value for money. I probably could have gotten a finer quality tomahawk if I had spent a couple of hundred dollars. But after all, |I was looking for and purchased a hand tool and found what I needed.

Der Axtstiel ist leider beschädigt, zum Glück wollte ich diesen eh noch verzieren. Aber dennoch sind das Makel die ich mit einem Punkt Abzug bestrafe, Qualitätskontrolle Fehlanzeige da eine Verletzungsgefahr besteht.
