Lovecraft is buoyed by amusing performances and a script that references the writer's complicated mythos without getting lost in the eldritch details. Kyle Davis (Men of a Certain Age) plays the title role, a hess office worker who discovers that his bloodline to Lovecraft makes him humanity's last hope against the writer's most memorable creation, the monster-god Cthulhu, which prepares to return to Earth. With the help of his friends (cowriter-producer Devin McGinn and Barak Hardley) and the mysterious Captain Olaf (Gregg Lawrence), Jeff sets out to stop Cthulhu and his minions before it can reconstruct the artifact that will grant it limitless power. Lack of budget and star power doesn't hamper director Henry Saine from delivering a breezy, goofy comedy with a smattering of solid special effects and even a terrific, comic book-inspired animated sequence that does quite well at boiling down Lovecraft's elaborate mythology into a few slam-bang minutes. Saine, Davis, and McGinn also deliver an enjoyable commentary track as part of the extras, which also include an animatic for the "origins" sequence, an extended scene, and the original theatrical trailer. --Paul Gaita
